For the last few weeks I've been engaged in some of the most mysterious studies in lettercarving. Drawing in this craft is a mixture of draftsmanship and free art. The shapes and curves must have a unity and purpose, but drawing freehand also encourages the letters to move for the viewer, giving our script life.

Small Portland Monument
Been working on this unusual piece in Portland limestone straight after the wretchedly hard Moleanos stuff previously. It took a concerted effort to soften my strikes! s
